Classical Guitar Composition Project – 2012
Canberra Classical Guitar Society, with the support of Wesley Music Foundation, launched The Classical Guitar Composition Project in 2010. The winners of the two $1,000 commissions were Bradley Kunda and Michael Sollis. Their compositions will be performed at an upcoming concert by Canberra Guitar Ensemble.
With the generous, ongoing support of donors, we are pleased to announce a second round of competition for an additional two works. We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from interested composers of music for classical guitar ensemble.
The aim of the project is to commission two works for amateur guitar orchestra with the intention of supporting two aspiring composers (age 20-30) in the Canberra region and to increase the repertoire of music for guitar orchestra and specifically for the Canberra Guitar Ensemble (made up of members of Canberra Classical Guitar Society).
Applications from interested composers are now being sought. Eligibility is open to anyone, but the selection panel will be guided by a preference to award commissions to composers who are capable of writing for amateur guitar orchestra, with the additional preference that they be from the Canberra region. There will be a three-person selection panel, at least two of whom will be professional classical guitarists and at least two of whom must be members of Canberra Classical Guitar Society. The final compositions will be single movement works for 4-part guitar orchestra and of around 3-5 minutes in length, although the composers’ discretion will be paramount.
Depending on decisions by the selection panel, awardees may be eligible for up to $1,000 each for their work. The selection panel will establish a timetable and completion criteria with the selectee(s). The project funds are maintained by Wesley Music Foundation who will dispense the award payment.
